1 – Hails, Dawn ov Hate! It is a
pleasure to have you answering our questions. Would you be
kind enough to tell us how did Dawn ov Hate start and what
are their goals?
Ave
Heraklyon! DoH starts three years ago (aprox) when Bastard (Of
Darkness, Graveyard) and I (Sign of KatuMarus, ex-Beheaded
Lamb) decided to create a band together. We know each other
for a lot of years and we have been involved (and still we
are) in many bands into Spanish extreme metal scene. We had
some interesting ideas and wanted to spread them and take
them out from ourselves so we asked to Fiar (Foscor) if he
wanted to join and accepted, this way we closed the circle
with this line-up and recorded our first work, in a too fast
way, I must say. Our goal is to continue playing “black
fucking metal” until it motivates us enough to do it.
Personally, I don’t see myself playing anything more than
extreme metal and I hope It will be like this for many years
more…
2 – Dawn ov Hate was born in 2004 and after 3 years,
a demo was released. The demo is called “Death D’Hivern”
which is the same name your next album shall have, something
that we will discuss later. Apparently, this demo is a promo
CD that was sent to some labels and friends and its
impression was limited to 66 copies. Why have you decided to
that it this way?
Well, I’m not too
sure that we’ll keep the same name for the next album. The
new album is (already) composed with new stuff, new songs…
so I wouldn’t like to keep something what doesn’t fit with
the new “vision”. We recorded (and spread) the promo CD with
the only purpose of getting a deal with some label,
something that finally happened. The promo CD doesn’t have
any economical value… it’s just composed by a recorded CDR
with pro-print info sheet. We limited the edition to 66 just
because we didn’t want to spend too much money with this. As
I’ve said, that wasn’t any interest in doing a “limited
edition” for collectors nor anything like that, just a
reasonable quantity for not wasting our money.
3 – Also about your demo from 2006, it is known that it
is completely sold out. Were any of the copies really sold
to people? If so, did you have any feedback from it?
No, no copies left from this stuff.
They were just sent to record labels, some zine and some
close friends just to get their valuable opinions. About
feedback, well, as you can imagine, we got some different
opinions and feedbacks. We found some people who liked the
stuff a lot and wrote us with nice words, demanded us for
live gigs… and some of them weren’t any interested in what
we were doing. I must say it was not as easy as I thought in
a first moment about finding a “nice” deal with a record
label. If I have to be sincere with you, I always thought
that the stuff would be released pretty time before, but
well, we got eternal patience with this and we took this
demo just like something to be a little more known into
black metal scene. We would like to strike harder with our
new stuff which is going to be quite better than our
previous work. I guess the scene is overpopulated with black
metal bands so it’s not so easy to get your stuff released,
and if you put this together with piracy, massive mp3
downloading and all this shit, then, I find a logical
thinking if record labels doesn’t want to risk their money
releasing stuff…
4 – So, your debut album will
be called “Death D’Hivern” as well and it will include all
the songs from the demo. What should we expect from these
old songs? Are they fairly different from the demo?
Yes, same songs, better sound…
it’s just as easy like that. The sound was too low about
volume when we did the mastering so we wanted to fix that.
Besides, our label DEATH DEALERS ASSOCIATION needed around
30mins so we arranged some interlude and some new parts to
make the total running play time a bit longer. We are lucky,
because Bastard owns a professional recording studio so it’s
“free” for us to make some arrangements. And so it was done.
We mastered again all the songs and the final result gives
more power to the tracks. Besides that we got a new amazing
layout from our comrade Perversor. We did a first layout
ourselves but we weren’t satisfied enough with the result,
so DEATH DEALERS ASSOCIATION put us on contact with
Perversor and everything went really great. We love the new
layout, it expresses exactly the concept of DoH, he did a
really great job, as well as in some others works he does.
We can say we have increased the level of the recording in a
very high percentage with this new imagery.
5 – What
does “Death D’Hivern” means and is it related in any way
with a concept behind the album or is it just a name you
though that sounded good for your release?
The word “hivern” means “winter”
in Catalonian language, so you could translate the title
like “Death of Winter” more or less, although the concept is
a bit deeper than a cliché title that could you think of at
first sight. First of all, we love Catalonian language,
culture and tradition above all so we were agreed in
including some Catalonian word. We will use for sure some
more Catalonian language in our next album; this is
something we want to empower in all of our coming works.
6 – The label which is going to release your
first album is called Death Dealers Association and it is
based on Poland. How did you discover this label and what
convinced you that it was the best option for releasing you
album?
They contacted
us. And we are deeply thankful to them about this. They
showed a big interest in our work… We didn’t ask for
anything, we don’t play music for the money or recognition;
these two things are totally secondary. Of course is nice if
you get some euros by doing something you like or someone
writes you and says he/she likes your music, but the only
thing we wanted was someone showing us respect and interest
in our music. DEATH DEALERS ASSOCIATION gathers both and
it’s a big pleasure to us to work with them. They are
bidding hard for new (and not so new) bands and we hail them
for this. We only demanded some few copies for the band, the
same shit as always, band trades, friends… We hope all the
copies will be sold out and DEATH DEALERS ASSOCIATION will
be able to re-invest the money in releasing more stuff from
bands. Music should be done about feelings and not about
money, anyway, everyone has their own interests.
7 – Your imagery is clearly satanic, as the
album cover and the songs show. I wanted to ask you how that
spiritual side of yours influences you in terms of music
composition. Do you get your inspiration from hatred towards
Christianity only or from somewhere else?
I’d say this album is more
anti-Christian than “satanic” in its imaginery concept. We
used a lot of biblical passages and apocalyptic visions to
perform the lyrics and visual concept of “Death d’Hivern”. I
wouldn’t dare saying this is a “concept” album composed
around “Apocalypse” but in its major part we talk about this.
Maybe this is our way to deny of what once was created and
demand for total annihilation of false idols and prophets.
Of course is a black hate spit on the face of Christianity
too but we didn’t abuse at all of “satanic” images and
totems…
8 – Once again, due to your
satanic beliefs, I am forced you to question something else.
Personally I would say that every single person needs only a
bit of knowledge and reasoning to see the Christian Church’s
hypocrisy. What lead you to fight against mankind’s greatest
disease, as I like to call it?
Church and Christian mafia abused so
much of people that now are getting their own medicine.
People seems to have opened their eyes and realize of the
hypocrisy built upon the faith of people. We are just a
little warrior more in this crusade of religion discredit, a
pain in their fat asses of Christianity and their age of
lies. Dawn ov Hate is our little contribution to their
destruction…
9 – The Portuguese black metal
underground is becoming very consistent due to bands who
managed to drift away from the marasmus that worldwide black
metal is about to get into. Recent bands like Crystalline
Darkness, Tumulum and Penitência seem like a good suggestion
from our country, along with the “oldies” Decayed and Corpus
Christii. How is the black metal underground in our
neighbour country, Spain? What bands do you think are the
best in “España”?
Well, in fact, here
is pretty the same thing of what you say about Portugal. We
actually have some new good bands and there are some old
bands refusing to be buried what is really a great thing. I
will always like bands such as PRIMIGENIUM, NAZGUL, BEHEADED
LAMB, URUK-HAI… they built black metal scene in Spain when
all people were listening to death metal (style which I
fucking love, don’t get me wrong!) I played in some of the
named bands and I’m still close friend with some members
into those bands, I have a lot of respect for what they did
and represented in Spain, but we have to look into the
present/future and I see great bands too, just to mention
some, FOSCOR is doing a fucking great job and promoting
Spanish black metal out of our borders, same goes for
PROCLAMATION, TEITANBLOOD (be aware with their new work!!)
between others. I must say, not naming anyone just for being
diplomatic, there are a lot of SHITTY bands here. About
black metal scene I think we are now a bit late, because we
always had the quality but never did the effort enough or
had the confidence in making this bigger… Anyways, better
late than never!!
10 – Your brand of black
metal is called by you as “Pure Fucking Black Metal”, which
is a label that I’ve found really capable of fitting your
sound. What are the bands that have influenced you the most
and why?
Pure black
fucking metal… there’s no other way! It’s sometimes hard to
me to understand some other kind of label about black metal.
I assume people wants to re-invent black metal or
disassociate theirselves from “traditional” black metal
adding some stupid suffixes but we are proud of what we play
and we don’t want to search for bombastic labels to our
music. This is only BLACK METAL… raw guitars, raping basses,
fast drums… the way black metal should be! About influences,
the list would be endless, you know. I can say we take A LOT
influences from old bands and some more from new bands. We
are not pretending to sound like Darkthrone but we are not
going to invent anything new either… We three have listened
to thousand black metal bands during our lives so it’s
almost impossible to not get some influences from many of
them… I think is ok… Just say one band without any
influences from any other band…
11 – I understand that all the 3
members of Dawn ov Hate have or had others bands beside this
project. Did you have any difficulty on meeting and
rehearsing because of the other projects, also of great
quality, like Foscor and Of Darkness?
No, there’s not any problem with our
side-bands since we just met when we have some new stuff to
arrange. Every one of us has it own role into Dawn ov Hate
pretty clear so, we just need to met and work on those ideas.
The music from DoH is basically composed by Bastard and we
have total faith in what he does. Of course, we discuss
about the lines or basis of a song… We three add our
personal touches to the final result and I think this is one
of the reasons we can play, just in my opinion, good songs.
I don’t care what other members do in their respective “main
bands” but we three are totally concentrated when we gather
together to play with DoH and this is what it counts for me.
12 –
Since you are about to release the album Death D’Hivern” do
you have any gigs planned, to promote the album, by now? Do
you consider the possibility of playing in Portugal
somewhere in a not so distant future?
Well, being sincere, there are no
plans to play live in a near future. I have to admit that it
would be great to do this since I like the “live” experience
but this is not our goal at this moment. Maybe in some
future we could play some live attacks. Of course we would
love to play in Portugal and since you are our neighbours it
would be pretty easy to arrange something with any of the
bands there. I hope someday… I’m pretty sure we could do a
pretty aggressive and intense show
