1 – First of all, thanks for accepting our
interview request. Would you please tell us, how did Eohl started as a band?
What’s its origin and where is it going? What was your objective, with the
band’s creation?
Well, it started as a little project consisting on me and a old friend of mine.
She would play the drums and other instruments, so we were the perfect pair. But
before recording the first demo, she had to leave the band, because of
unsolvable problems, so I had to continue all by myself through this path, in
honor to what we had done.
2 – As far as I know, your lyrics deal with death, solitude and despair, grim
feelings that I feel the need to question its origin. From where does your
lyrical inspiration come from?
My inspiration… Life is full of sadness, deceptions and misery. My inspiration
is life itself and death of course… And I think that the only way of feeling
that this is real and expressing it profoundly enough, is through the music I
create.
3 – Personally, I’d say that for a Demo, first and only release, In Memoriam
possesses an astounding quality. How and where did you actually record the
entire demo’s sound?
I’ve recorded and mixed it directly in my house, in an old computer, with a
cheap soundcard and a lot of cables. The result was better than I expected so
I’m glad I didn’t had to go to any studio.
4 – Your brand of black metal is catalogued as “depressive black metal”, a genre
which has recently exploded achieved an enormous fanbase, leading some people to
state that “depressive black metal” is the new big trend among the metal. Like
all trends, there are some good bands and some terrible bands, which are the
most common. Which bands do you think are the best nowadays?
That’s the impression I’ve been having a long time ago. Everything is turning
into a trend and product. That’s why when people ask me, I don’t tend to say
that I do “depressive black metal”, even if that’s the right definition. But I
think that “funeral black metal” would suit better, or something like it, a
unique style created by my music and not something created based on an already
existent genre. But yeah, that’s for sure, there are a lot of good depressive
black metal bands, which are way ahead from those who do it because is trendy,
like Xasthur or ColdWorld for example.
5 – While listening to “In Memoriam”, I’ve noted a clear influence from Xasthur
and Mutiilation. Certainly, these excellent bands ended up influencing your
sound, but could you tell the readers which bands influenced you the most and
why?
Exactly, Xasthur is the one who influenced me the most, due to its genius way of
doing everything. His way of dragging every note to the maximum desperation and
suffering level has clearly showed me a path and way of doing everything,
completely different from what I’ve seen way before Malefic decided to pick up a
guitar.
6 – Most of the Portuguese people don’t know the Spanish black metal scene,
maybe for laziness, or maybe just because its bands aren’t well known yet.
Before finding your band, the only bands I knew were Between the Frost (who
recently played in Portugal), Berserk and Godüs. Can you explain to the readers
how is the underground evolving in Spain is and what are the best bands, in your
opinion?
Though it doesn’t look so, there is a lot of quality. While pagan black metal,
perhaps must have been the genre that has been mostly cultivated with bands like
Hordak, Xerion, Berserk… In terms of quality… We may also find others like
Frozen (what a coincidence) and Akerbeltz, which has a more traditional sound,
but generally there is quality and variation and without a doubt you should
check the scene deeper.
7 – As one man band, did you ever consider the possibility of recruiting live
members to perform live? Is there any possibility of seeing you, one day,
performing on Portugal?
For now I intend to add no one else to the band. Maybe some session members to
record something or perhaps for a gig, which is unlikely... It is not what I
search specifically, but if I came across the opportunity of playing live, I
don’t think I’ll let it slip away.
If I’m able to play outside Spain, for example Portugal, it would be better,
though the music I make would be difficult to play live, due to its slow pace
and time, in my opinion...
Yes, I’ve always tried to give a certain funereal atmosphere to my music, which
maybe it would be able to notice in my second release, whose name will be
related to funeral.
9 – It is known that the band was firstly composed by two members: you and
Tortvre. Unfortunately Tortvre had to leave because of personal issues. Did her
stay had enough time to influence the recording in any way?
She helped me with everything related with the image (logo and cover), the name
and inspiration.
10 – I suppose that you’ve had total control, not only on the sound, but also on
everything related to the demo, such as the cover, etc. Personally I must say
that the cover fits the album’s atmosphere perfectly and as I listen to it, I
feel I’m walking on an obscure forest, in the middle of the night, with the moon
watching from above. It is a creepy feeling indeed, but I wanted to know how and
why you chose that photo for the cover.
It’s a picture I took in a forest near a place in Spain, called Segovia. That
photo without a doubt was which satisfied me the most, being the photo very
related with the theme of the demo and with the feeling I placed in my music. It
was taken exactly to appear on the cover…
11 – It may be kind of early to ask this, but after a release with this quality,
I’m forced to ask you if you have any new material or if you are working on it,
for a new release.
Do you have something prepared for
this year or 2009?
I’m expecting to release a second
record in this Winter, maybe earlier. The next releases, time shall see…
12 – After the release of “In Memoriam”, there has passed 8 months or so. Did
you have any feedback by now? How was it?
Until now, I haven’t received any, but I haven’t done anything for receiving
that. With my second demo I’ll try to find someone who produces it for me and
who supports me on its promotion.
13 – We’ve reached the end of this
interview and it was a pleasure to have contacted with you, Frozen. Do you have
anything left to say to the readers?
Yes, I wanted to thank everyone who listened to my music and thought that it was
worth it; Tortvre because without her nothing would take shape and you for this
interview.
